  1. He Dreams

From the recording He Dreams

Back when I had a day job I was driving to it early one morning and saw this fellow sitting on the median curb. I don't know his real story of course, but I know mine and the stories of a few friends -- so I borrowed bits and pieces and built a story for this fellow ... which strikes pretty close to home some days.

Lyrics

HE DREAMS

He’s sitting on the curb, 7:30 on a Monday morning
Gaunt, flushed and wasted which a bottle in his hand
Takes another pull and can’t remember when he tasted much of anything
Life is nothing like he planned

But he dreams of a time when he was younger -- a different kind of hunger gnawed
his belly in the night
Now it seems, back in those days he never used to thing about forever anyhow
He sure thinks about it now

Counts up what this life has bought him -- Wonders when the current caught him
Dragged him off his course till every day begins this way
Deep inside he’d like to change it, grab his life, rearrange it
Maybe he can start tomorrow if he makes it through today

Cause, back in the 60s the world was all promise, whatever he wished could be his
Now he’s in his sixties - that promise lies broken
This pile of nothing is all that there is

So he dreams of a time when he was younger -- a different kind of hunger gnawed
his belly in the night
But it seems, back in those days he never used to thing about forever anyhow.
He sure thinks about it now
